Eco week was an exciting and successful week. Practitioners worked with each class in the school, using creative activity to explore and address local and global environmental issues.

All activity in the week was dedicated to ecological themes and the creativity with which the staff approached both the work with Creative Partnerships and independent sessions resulted in a rich and dynamic experience for pupils and the school as a whole.

An example of the committment to creativity is in the school's approach to recycling. Unit four became the school recycling centre in the run-up to the week and children from the whole school brought materials from home which previously would have gone to land fill. A theatre visited the school and taught the children to reduce, re-use and recycle and the chant was heard throughout the school during the week. Materials from the recycling centre were used throughout the school and became sculptures and puppets, mobiles and jewellery as the children worked with visiting practitioners and staff from the school to create 'planet recycled' and other wonderful objects. In PE the children participated in recycling relays and an eco room was created entirely from discarded newspapers. Long term impacts include regular litter picks in the local area by reception puplis and the establishment of a compost bin, where all the daily fruit waste now goes to feed the school planters and local allotments.

Following a poetry session by Just Poets, the Deputy Head said that she wishes that she could teach like that all the time, and said that she knew that people would be concerned about discipline, but that there would be no discipline problems if the pupils were engaged like they were in that session.

The week culminated in a whole-school assembly where pupils shared and celebrated their learning in front of parents, local agencies and the mayor and mayoress of Burnley.

"The children learned how to design and make planters and the importance of taking care of our outside environment. They have a knowledge of vegetables and flowers that will grow outside. We now have two lovely planters and the children have learned all about plants and animals and mini-beasts as a result. The children will remember this for the rest of their lives." Year One Teacher

"Dear Norm and Pam, thank you for coming. You were very funny, especially Norman. We learnt a lot about poems and words in imagination. We also thank you for helping us to do our performance and reading interesting poems that you wrote. I was amazed by what we learnt." Class 6S
