Summer art workshops were held over four days in Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery. Artist Weston Hammond worked with participants using natural materials to create a work of art, which would then be brought together at the end of the project to create a sculptural installation for the museum.
The young people made a zen moss garden on the first day, each working on their own to take home and also adding to a communal piece for the sculpture. Day two involved making natural paints out of spices and corn starch and learning about surface design, then creating a wall hanging.
The participants worked on a small tree trunk learning carving skills and also worked with clay making small sculptures to take home with them. Finally the group worked on the installation using wood, stone and wire.
The project was a great success with both the artist and young people enjoying an amazing experience.
Paul Flintoff from Blackburn Museum and Gallery made this comment, “Without advanced publicity we needed an artist who was capable of thinking on their feet and engaging with a wide range of visitors – age, ability and background. Weston’s lively engaging style suited us perfectly, his attitude and approach were very good. On Friday we had people waiting outside before we opened in order to secure a place on his workshop!”
