Working in partnership with Sure Start South West Burnley, Action Factory have been working with local people to develop ideas and involve them in the design of an art trail through the neighbourhood.

The project was inspired by visits to Barcelona and an awareness of how arts activity can be used to develop a sense of belonging in an area. Sure Start had recognised that during this time of major upheavel and change in the area (it is one of the Elevate East Lancashire housing renewal areas) that arts could be used as a tool for engaging the local community. They approached Action Factory early this year so that we could consult with local groups and figure out ways that people would like to engage in arts in their local environment. Lots of potential ideas came out of this and to start the project, 4 mini projects were set up to run over the summer of 2006.

This year Sure Start in SW Burnley became a Children's Centre which means that they needed to become more closely linked to Howarth St Community Health Centre and the Taywood Nursery School. Sure Start wanted these links to be conveyed to the centre users in a visual way and to develop ways of integrating the 3 'nodes' in people's minds was a focus for the project. The early parts of the project are being funded by by Arts Council England North West Grants for the Arts scheme with additional assistance form Burnley Borough Council.
